Oceanside Manor –
Recasting a Mid-Century Retreat 2021 – construction
Built in 1963, the Oceanside Manor is part of Honolulu’s small Gold Coast collection of mid-century modern multifamily mid-rises along Kalākaua Avenue—named after King Kalākaua, the “Merry Monarch.” One of sixteen residential buildings stretching from Waikīkī to the base of Diamond Head, these structures occupy a rare position between the ocean and Kapi‘olani Park, steps from beloved local surf breaks. Originally constructed during the post-statehood boom, when jet travel and foreign investment fueled a wave of speculative development, these compact units were intended as short-term vacation retreats.
Today, the romance of oceanfront living is tempered by the realities of aging infrastructure, constant exposure to salt and sun, and the costs of repair. Materials and systems must contend with the corrosive effects of the marine environment, while lifestyles have shifted: many residents are now full-time occupants rather than seasonal visitors. For one couple—who share a passion for surfing but lead busy, high-pressure lives—the challenge was to create a home that supports relaxation, fosters connection to the ocean, and accommodates a minimalist approach to living.
This project redefines the mid-century vacation condo through a series of minimal interventions and custom millwork installations resulting in a radically open and adaptive space.
