Design Loops is a modular exhibition system developed to support repeated storytelling across projects, campuses, and publics. Its inaugural installation anchored a special exhibition during the 2025 Society of College and University Planning Annual Conference in Honolulu, where tour groups visited the campus to engage with the university’s most recent design-build work. Positioned at a 45-degree angle, the structure referenced the offset between the built campus grid and the surrounding mountain range, prompting conversations about place, identity, and long-range university stewardship.

Fabric panels draped across the frames animated the installation and revealed multiple layers of narrative. The outward-facing surfaces introduced principles that guide campus design, while the inward-facing panels exposed process—archival images, working models, research, and materials rarely seen by the public. Measuring over 40 feet in length, the lightweight system consists of sixteen repeatable modules designed for rapid assembly, disassembly, and compact storage. As a platform, Design Loops supports ongoing dialogue and fosters continuity across projects, allowing the university to share evolving commitments, highlight design-build work, and engage visitors, students, and partners in an active conversation about the future of place.

HIGHLIGHTS

Design Loops received a 2025 IIDA Hawai‘i Pacific Chapter Design Excellence Award in the Maker category. This framework was first deployed to introduce the Campus Design Lab during the 2025 National SCUP Conference in Honolulu.
