A design initiative led by Architecture for Humanity and sponsored by Nike and Woolworth’s, sought to build the Siyathemba Youth Sports Facility and HIV/AIDS Outreach Center on a modest budget out of local materials and with the direct involvement of community members. Strawn.Sierralta developed a modular concrete panel, which utilized a specialized concrete formwork system that incorporated the void of footballs into the thermal mass of the construction, while maintaining structural strength and utilizing less material. It is a reaction to the urban parking lot and the void it creates in public space. The Calgary 2006 ArtCity Festival addressed the idea of “Truth & Lies” and sent out a request-for-proposal for an outdoor pavilion for the display of art. The site was one parking spot located on the Stephen Avenue Mall in downtown Calgary. Strawn.Sierralta’s design utilized a mass-produced component of the automobile industry to camouflage a secret art garden behind the reflection of its surroundings. The world-famous Chicago green roofs will be invisibly connected to city parks, private gardens and backyards all over the region. Newly introduced honeybee populations will allow all these green spaces to share their genetic information, while simultaneously growing a healthier ecosystem and producing honey flavored by the city's neighborhoods. Strawn.Sierralta designed the home with Cradle to Cradle design principles, which are rooted in the idea that materials should exist in a waste-free, holistic lifecycle. Physically connected, recycled and recyclable materials were specified throughout. A greenhouse placed at the center of the home, doubles as a thermal chimney. This new “hearth” for the home ensures that fresh air can be pulled through all spaces of the house and provides year-round growing space for fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. The kitchen flows directly onto a terraced garden that provides space for seasonal outdoor gardening. A rooftop photovoltaic array and horizontally positioned wind turbines produce 30% more energy than the home uses, allowing the excess energy to power an electric vehicle, or to be sold back to the grid. It is a terraced urban farm that provides direct connection to seasonal growth cycles, keeping its inhabitants in touch with the larger natural environment. The mass of the buildings is aligned with predominate wind patterns to create a Valley Effect that maximizes the efficiency of the site's wind turbines. The East, West and South faces of all the buildings are lined with a sun shading system comprised of over 4,880 solar panels and fiber optic light collectors. Energy consumption has been reduced by over 75% and water consumption has been cut by at least 55% for the entire site. The block produces 121% of the energy it uses.
