The design is based on a modular concrete panel, which utilized a specialized concrete formwork system that incorporated the void of footballs into the thermal mass of the construction, while maintaining structural strength and utilizing less material. It is a reaction to the urban parking lot and the void it creates in public space. The design utilized a mass-produced component of the automobile industry to camouflage a secret art garden behind the reflection of its surroundings. This project was produced for the Calgary 2006 ArtCity Festival that addressed the idea of “Truth & Lies”. Sometimes we are not defined by what is there, but by what is not there. The horizontal nature of the urban parking lot is refracted in the reclaimed side-view mirrors that form the structure for a vertical sculpture garden. Open to the sky, the sinuous garden provides an ascending background for sculpture, while the lines of the parking lot are mixed with the image of the clouds above. "Parked Garden" is a prototype for an urban garden. It is a reaction to the urban parking lot and the void it creates in public space. "Artline Chicago" is a linear, multi media park that uses the resources of the museums and cultural institutions downtown to bring art into the neighborhoods that parallel the Bloomingdale Line. The disused, elevated train line stretches from Lawndale Ave. on the west to the Chicago River on the east, passing four neighborhoods and crossing 37 streets along its length. The project proposes removing existing heavy infrastructure and replacing it with new lightweight bridges. The intervention would allow for seamless traffic flow underneath and above. Each bridge would act as a platform for art and would allow for direct access to the line and new space for neighborhood programming.
