RAIN GARDEN
Garden Experiment 3
Rain Garden is both figuratively and literally a rain garden. Strawn.Sierralta developed this experimental garden in the spirit of the 18th Century English and French garden follies, with a decidedly modern emphasis on rainwater management. The idealized pastoral image is recreated and framed by an object that is collecting and storing its own water, while at the same time spreading the seeds, and therefore the genetic information, of native tall grasses and plants. Visitors to the garden slip behind a curtain of rain to find a quiet place to rest. The rain acts as a lens through which the tilted landscapes are viewed and its rhythmic sound quiets the noise of the world outside. Rain Garden works as a folly, sitting apart from the landscape, while simultaneously integrating itself into the larger environment by acting as a machine for endemic seed dispersal.
