GENETIC DATA GARDEN: ORGANIZED PARADISE
Garden Experiment 4
Organized Paradise is an experimental garden and educational tool that visually illustrates the spectrum of life that exists in just one tiny branch of the Tree of Life. The Angiospermae clade, also known as the Flowering Plants, is made up of 400,000 species, but the average modern garden is only planted with the few species of plants sold at big box retailers. These species represent only a fraction of a percent of the world’s biological diversity. The world was first introduced to the Tree of Life in Charles Darwin’s book, “On the Origin of Species”, in 1859. The tree is an elegant tool that acts as a visual diagram for the enormous complexity of life on earth and provides a structure for discovering the relationships between all living creatures. Organized Paradise uses the text of the Tree of Life as a growing surface and organizing system for the diverse representation of species.
